Policy Update
Medication Abortion
In August, Rep. Carolyn Maloney, along with Reps. Diana DeGette, Barbara Lee, and Ayanna Pressley, will introduce a House resolution in support of medication abortion care policies that are equitable and based in science. The resolution will highlight the efficacy and safety of medication abortion and the harms of restricting access to care. It also calls for policies governing access to medication abortion care that are grounded in science and ensure equitable access for every body.

This month, litigation teams from the Center for Reproductive Rights, Planned Parenthood, the Lawyering Project, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the ACLU of Texas, and others filed a federal lawsuit to block an extreme anti-choice law in Texas. The law (SB 8) — which is scheduled to go into effect on September 1st — bans abortion as early as six weeks, before many people even know they're pregnant and grants almost any person — a neighbor, coworker, or even a complete stranger — the power to sue someone for "aiding and abetting" a pregnant person seeking abortion care.
