El Chaparral: What's Happening on the Ground?
A panel on the current status of El Chaparral migrant encampment in Tijuana, and the ongoing humanitarian efforts of the Chaparral Humanitarian Alliance.

GRACIAS!

If we've learned anything throughout the rollercoaster that has been this pandemic, it's that our followers are not only super creative, but the reason Border Angels has continued its life-saving work.

Take our friend Kyos: Kyos celebrated his Bar Mitzvah on July 17th, he hosted a baseball game/fundraiser in celebration. He chose Border Angels because he really wants to support a just immigration system. He especially wants to focus on helping kids at the border, and he raised over $1K! We are so touched at his kindness and compassion for others, and can't wait to share more pictures of his ball game.

GRACIAS KYOS!

If you would like to organize a fundraiser on behalf of Border Angels, you can email us at [email protected] to get started today!
The terrain on this Saturday’s drop routes were a challenge, with rough terrain of rocks to climb over. Fortunate to have cloud cover for part of the morning, both groups moved swiftly, checking and replenishing drop sites before the weather reached its maximum temperature.

With the early morning cloud cover and slightly cooler temperatures, every step taken was calculated, groups moving with caution for any potential rattlesnake warming up in the mild morning temperatures. Beautiful red tailed hawks soared above and cast moving shadows all around us.

Both groups combed the desert, gathering 10 bags worth of trash, keeping the backcountry in our Public Lands clean and maintained.

Another early start on drop day, to try to get going before the burning sun rose overhead. On one route, we 4x4 shuttled the group members ahead to cut down on roughly 2.5 miles of hiking in the heat. Both groups saw a great level of supply consumption. Some supplies were left months ago, some just from a few weeks ago. All consumed containers and other waste were picked up and hauled out, roughly 30lbs total between the two groups.

The morning cloud cover that brought some shade and high humidity would soon break away, exposing our groups to the bare sun with the humidity lingering around. Climbing over rocks that felt like charcoal and walking through washes that felt like lava, our two groups were able to stock dozens of bottles of water, canned food, and supply packs to help with the summer heat. We were able to get everyone in the groups out of the canyons in time before anyone had any dangerous effects from the heat, with just some mild heat effects due to the attention and excellent care from our Safety Team.

Another successful Day Laborer Outreach! Our team was able to distribute some moral support and over 70 packages of snacks, clothing, and hygiene products to two different locations.

We continue to diligently serve and listen to our day laborers and ensure their fair treatment, and that their needs are being met. We are happy to see that the amount of work for our Day Laborers is steadily increasing and even happier that our friends have not encountered any injustices thus far.

If you are interested in donating you can email us at [email protected] to donate assembled care packages with: masks, neon T-shirts, and hand sanitizers. We are also always looking to partner with restaurants willing to donate prepped meals. For more info or questions please feel free to email us!

** Exciting Update!
------------------------------------------------------------
🎊 📣 WE HAVE HIT 90 BONDS🎊 🎉

We are extremely excited to introduce our 90th bond recipient Raul! He is a 27-year-old asylum seeker from Brazil who spent 5 months inside the Otay Mesa Detention Center.

When we started this program, we never could have imagined the impact we have made in less than two years. Through this program, we have assisted people from 21 different countries. We've helped members of the LGBTQI+ community, victims of political violence, domestic violence, and endured immeasurable trauma only to be told they have no place in this country. Yet, we are luck to have met so many strong people who thanks to YOU now are free from for-profit immigration prison.

This year, we want to free 100 people from immigration detention, and we need YOUR help. We are so close, but we have almost entirely exhausted our funds! When you donate to our Familias Reunidas Immigration Bond Fund you are helping a mother hug her son, a husband hug his spouse, friends be together again, and so much more!

Shelter Aid renovations all around for our supported Tijuana shelters! This time we're helping out Pro Amore Dei laying in some tile in their bathroom and making sure to fix a very problematic leak. Pro Amore Dei shelter houses primarily women and children, and we are grateful to provide more dignified living spaces for all of them.
Your continued support has helped us accomplish these feats, as well as continuing to pay rent, groceries, utilities, and so much more. You can help more shelters turn into beautiful living spaces for our migrant families by donating through the button on this post.

It might not seem like a huge accomplishment, but we are elated to see our friends at Camino de Salvacion cooking with their brand-new blender! Your donations help our migrant siblings cover rent, groceries, and so much more, but also help prepare delicious home-cooked meals.
Part of our promise to provide more dignified living spaces for migrant families, is ensuring our supported shelters have the tools to make everyone feel welcome. Your continued support has helped us provide washers, dryers, stoves, vehicles, and in this case to make some homemade salsa for our friends to feel a little bit more at home.

Texas and eight other states sued to stop DACA
DACA recipients have spent years hanging by a thread, and say this news doesn’t come as a surprise, since they have spent years under direct attacks.
“We’re full of sadness, this wasn’t a surprise as we knew this judge wasn’t favorable for us,” said Dulce Garcia. She is a DACA recipient since 2014. “We’re tired, so tired to have our rights violated once more.”
A federal judge in Texas ruled this program as unconstitutional, arguing that former president Barak Obama did not have enough backing from Congress.
“I had the great privilege to set foot in Mexico after 33 years in the U.S., and to take advantage of Advanced Parole and have this permit to travel, and now this ruling has done away with these privileges once more.”
These benefits have been available since 2011 and more than 650,000 people depend on it [DACA].
Although the judge declared no need for massive deportations, or to taking “uneccessary actions”, there are over 80,000 DACA applications directly affected by this ruling.
“Don’t let this get you down, it’s very painful to once again be in this situation, but we are strong, the fight continues until we all have a path to citizenship.”

** California Expands Medi-Cal for Undocumented Persons 50 Years or Older
------------------------------------------------------------

California becomes the first state in the US to extend Medi-Cal to low-income adults over 50, regardless of immigration status.

By Heder Casas

"(NOTICIAS YA) .- California Governor Gavin Newsom ([link removed]) signs a bill that expands Medi-Cal coverage for undocumented Californians over 50 years of age.

California expands access to Medi-Cal health coverage as the state continues to work to slow the spread of the delta variant of COVID-19 ([link removed]) .

Governor Gavin Newsom and other leaders met Tuesday at a Central Valley clinic in Fresco County ([link removed]) to promote Medi-Cal expansion, where Newsom signed Assembly Bill 133. The bill expands full-scope Medi-Cal to approximately 235,000 low-income undocumented Californians age 50 and older.

According to the immigration attorney, Dulce García ([link removed]) , this Medi-Cal service is a benefit granted by the state of California, it is funds from the state of California that protect us; and since they are not federal funds, it does not impact an immigration case in the future."

** LOCAL IMMIGRANT ADVOCATES SPEAK OUT ON DACA COURT RULING
------------------------------------------------------------
By Miriam Raftery

"Dulce Garcia, chair of the San Diego Immigrant Rights Consortium, issued this statement: “Judge Hanen’s decision will be analyzed and discussed over the coming days. This is a disappointing decision and highlights the urgent need to ensure that we have a path to citizenship for all.”

She adds, “What we need now is bold leadership from the Biden Harris administration to work with SDIRC and other organizations to secure and protect the future of the DACA program with comprehensive immigration reform that includes a pathway to citizenship not only for DACA recipients but also for all of our undocumented communities.”

For Garcia, the ruling is personal.

“I’ve called the border town of San Diego my home for over 30 years. I am an attorney, an entrepreneur, a leader,” she says. Yet she reveals, “I am also undocumented. Being undocumented means living with fear of being apprehended and deported. When we won our case defending DACA in the Supreme Court, thousands became hopeful that we would have protection from deportation and the opportunity to work lawfully. Our dreams, with the recent decision of the court in Texas, are once more put on hold. It is also devastating to see my clients, many of them minor children, undergo such turmoil.”

Garcia continued, “We do everything we’re told to do. Our contributions to this country are innumerable. Yet, there’s no path to citizenship for us. We pay taxes, build the economy, and contribute to our communities during a pandemic. Yet, we are rejected and insulted once more. Every day that we live without a path to citizenship, is a day filled with anxiety and fear.”

A HUGE step towards ensuring EVERYONE is covered, this campaign has been ongoing for 7 years, and we are so happy to have been part of its advocacy and support.

We thank the California Immigrant Policy Center for all of its efforts and for allowing us to help accomplish these milestones!
