TakeAction Minnesota Weekly Wrap

Dear John,

I hope you’re doing well, and I'm hoping we can all get outside soon. I'm going to get straight to the digest.

Here’s what we’re reading, watching, and listening to this week:

1. Voting Yes

From the WedgeLive, this is without a doubt, one of the best commentaries I’ve read about changing the Minneapolis city charter this fall to establish a new department of public safety. Read every word now, share with your friends, and bookmark it to share when election season starts. If you’re a Minneapolis resident, join us at the Yes 4 Minneapolis campaign kick off event this Tuesday, August 3 before National Night Out for Safety & Liberation. Sign up here.

2. Insulin 4 All

In 1921, a hundred years ago this week, Canadian doctors made a world changing medical breakthrough to treat diabetes. The insulin patent was sold in 1921 for $1 to the University of Toronto. Today, Big Pharma is killing people with the cost of insulin to maximize corporate profits. One hundred years later, there is still no generic insulin. Read this history. Listen to TakeAction’s podcast Action Prescribed.

3. Eviction Moratorium

The federal protection ends August. Billions of dollars in housing assistance are still available. Read more in the Washington Post. If you or someone you know needs rental assistance, there’s still time to apply in Minnesota.

4. Salmon

This piece, shared by a colleague, shows the heartbreaking consequence of climate change and rising water temperature in the Pacific Northwest of the U.S. where salmon are literally being boiled alive. See the video documented by a conservation group.

5. Air

As all of us likely know, Minnesota had the worst air quality in recorded history yesterday. Read more.

6. Power & Health

It’s not just food, medicine, and doctors that support good health, but power, community, belonging, and inclusion. Check out this public media episode.

7. Simone Biles

There’s a reason why gymnast Simone Biles is known as the GOAT (greatest of all time), from her world champion floor routines (see this incredible slow motion video) to the fact that she was strong enough to know her limits. Read more about her courageous withdrawal from the competition.

8. Suni Lee

Sunisa Lee, gymnast from St. Paul, MN, is the first Hmong-American to win a gold medal at the Olympics. I’m not crying, you are. Read and enjoy this piece in the Sahan Journal and check out these amazing photos in the New York Times.

9. Ted Lasso

Season 2 of the award-winning show is out now on Apple+. Have you seen it? Let me know what you think (it’s my favorite show on right now!). Read the review and watch the trailer.

10. Adorable

Olympic swimming winner Tom Daley is also known for his knitting. 🥰 Enjoy this adorable TikTok video.

That’s a wrap. Send me what you're reading and watching. Have a great weekend.
