When we announced that Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin would be our first target for 2022, we knew that control of the Senate could come down to this race.

Since then, Ron Johnson has had a DISASTER of a summer. First, he got blasted for calling the deadly January 6th riot a “peaceful protest.” Then, footage leaked in which he called climate change “bulls**t” — in the middle of record heat waves, droughts, floods, and wildfires.

But this might be the worst part: Since the spring, he’s been on a mission to spread dangerous misinformation about the safety of the COVID vaccine — behavior that looks downright catastrophic with the virus rebounding and hospitalizations and deaths on the rise.

We chose this race as our first target because we’ve seen that Wisconsin is swinging away from its 2016 vote to elect Trump and Johnson. It elected a Democratic governor in 2018, and President Biden won it narrowly last year. No matter what, it’s going to be one of the closest elections in the country in 2022.

Our organizing team in the state has spent weeks gathering stories from Wisconsinites willing to speak out about their senator’s dangerous behavior. This isn’t your same-old political operation that throws money at TV ads and hopes for the best. This is amplifying the voices of real people. From what I’ve seen, the momentum is building — fast.

And Ron Johnson seems to be aware that he’s going to have a tough re-election campaign, telling a conservative talk radio host that “I might not be the best candidate” and describing his time in the Senate as not “particularly successful.”

The truth is we won’t get this moment back. I know better than most people that it’s extremely difficult to defeat a sitting U.S. senator. If we wait around to see what happens, we could miss our chance.
