On July 15, the first round of Child Tax Credit payments started hitting bank accounts across the country — meaning an influx of up to $300 a month per kid for almost 90% of American families. I’m especially proud that more than 44,000 families (and more than 148,000 kids!) in the 53rd District are set to benefit.
Since we passed the American Rescue Plan in March, I’ve had the chance to travel around the district and talk directly with parents and kids about what the Child Tax Credit means to them and their families. For so many of them, these monthly payments will be life-changing — helping them pay bills, buy household necessities, and plan for the future.
The Child Tax Credit is so significant that it’s projected to cut childhood poverty in half. But right now, it’s set to expire in just one year — and a short-term approach to tackling child poverty isn’t enough. That’s why I’m working every day to make these tax credits permanent — because it’s unacceptable to allow even a single kid to fall back into poverty.
I won’t lie — it’s an uphill battle. If Republicans take back control of the House in 2022, the Child Tax Credit and so many other programs that benefit American families will end. Between an already slim majority and upcoming redistricting, Democrats can’t afford to lose a single seat if we’re going to keep the House blue in 2022 — including our district. Can you chip in today to support our campaign and help me keep up this work?
