Team,
Fifty-six years ago today, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Medicare and Medicaid into law to ensure that senior and low-income Americans could get the affordable health care they need.
It's difficult to picture a time where Medicaid and Medicare were not available, but it wasn't too long ago that the government providing health care for low-income and senior individuals seemed like an impossible idea. But our leaders worked hard to pass critical legislation that still provides millions of Americans with health care today.
The Medicare and Medicaid Act of 1965 sent a bold message that having access to health care should be a right, not a privilege, and we need to invest in social safety nets so all Americans can prosper. This historic legislation also taught us that when we find common ground and work together, we can accomplish incredible things.
All these years later, Medicaid and Medicare both remain an essential component of our country's economic safety net that helps low-income people and seniors get health care coverage. Today, we still have work to do to ensure that affordable health care is available to everyone, and I'm committed to fighting for bold policies that put all Rhode Islanders on a path toward financial stability.
If you believe that we need more bold ideas like Medicare and Medicaid to ensure people can prosper financially, make a contribution today to help me keep fighting for Rhode Island.
Thank you,
Seth
