FACT Coalition Mourns the Passing of Senator Carl Levin

Levin was a Tireless Champion in the Fights Against Corruption and Tax Avoidance

WASHINGTON, DC – The Financial Accountability and Corporate Transparency (FACT) Coalition mourned the passing of Senator Carl Levin of Michigan. Levin, who for many years held leadership positions with the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, used his powerful position to investigate money laundering, tax avoidance and evasion, and the many ways in which corrupt actors abused the U.S. financial system for personal gain.

“Senator Levin understood that corruption and rigged tax rules undermine democracy and the social contract,” said Ian Gary, executive director of the FACT Coalition. “Whether it was investigating how the criminal and corrupt stashed ill-gotten gains in U.S. banks or grilling multinational company executives about their tax avoidance practices, Senator Levin never stopped in his fight against corporate misconduct and corruption by the rich and powerful.”

Since its founding in 2011, the FACT Coalition, comprised of more than 100 civil society organizations, counted on Senator Levin as a strong ally in its work to pull back the veil on anonymous corporate ownership and to address the role the U.S. plays in facilitating corruption and illicit financial flows.

“The FACT Coalition will honor Senator Levin’s lifetime of public service by championing new tax justice policies and anti-corruption efforts and by ensuring that recently enacted landmark anti-corruption legislation, such as the Corporate Transparency Act, is faithfully implemented,” Gary said. “Senator Levin’s vision and work helped create the huge moment of opportunity we enjoy today to make real progress against multinational tax avoidance, tax evasion, and global corruption.”
