Dear Neighbor:
I hope you and your family are staying safe and healthy.
This week, due to increased transmission of the Delta variant, the CDC updated its masking guidance for fully vaccinated people. According to the new guidance, fully vaccinated individuals should wear a mask indoors in public if they are in an area of substantial or high transmission. As of today, Friday, LA County is designated as a high transmission area. Last week, the LA County Department of Public Health issued guidance requiring that everyone wear masks indoors in public spaces, regardless of vaccination status, as a precaution. We have come a long way in the fight against COVID – but the virus isn’t gone. We all must continue to follow the guidance of public health professionals to protect ourselves and our community against COVID-19.
The best way to stay healthy and protect yourself is to get the vaccine. The COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective, and our best tool to beat this virus. If you haven’t already, please get vaccinated. We need as many people as possible to get vaccinated to help our community recover and get back to normal.
It has been another busy week in Congress. The January 6th Select Committee began its investigation into the attack on the U.S. Capitol. On Tuesday, members of the committee heard from some brave law enforcement heroes who defended the Capitol that day. I am incredibly grateful to Sergeant Gonell, Officer Fanone, Officer Hodges, and Officer Dunn for their heroism, courage, and patriotism. The January 6th Select Committee will get to the bottom of what happened on that dark day to ensure such an assault on our democracy can never happen again.
This week, the House is advancing a package of appropriations bills that invest in America. These bills will benefit the health of working families; set us on the course for a clean energy future; ensure our children succeed in the classroom; create jobs; honor our veterans; and more. This funding will grow opportunity for the middle class and provide a lifeline to working families.
I’m also pleased that my bipartisan bill to bolster subnational diplomacy passed out of the House Foreign Affairs Committee this week. The City and State Diplomacy Act, which I introduced with Chairman Gregory Meeks and Rep. Joe Wilson, would establish an Office of City and State Diplomacy at the State Department to leverage federal resources to support local governments on the global stage.
