I am the Board Chair of Equal Rights Washington. I want to share a personal message explaining why Bob’s victory in the landmark Arlene’s Flowers case is deeply meaningful to me and to so many LGBTQ+ Washingtonians — and fundamental to upholding our values.
The stakes could not have been higher in this case. If the 6-3 conservative majority on the United States Supreme Court had overturned Bob’s victory, any Washington business owner that opposes marriage equality would have been free to refuse service to same-sex couples. The ruling would have extended to every state that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, impacting millions of people.
Picture yourself walking down the street and seeing a sign that reads, “We reserve the right to refuse service for all same-sex marriage ceremonies.” Or worse. What would that say about our values?
The attorneys for the owner of Arlene’s Flowers argued in court that she “politely” refused service — as if that makes it okay.
There is no such thing as being “politely” denied service because of who you are. Dignity depends, in part, on not having to shop around to see whether or a business will provide service, or deny you.
That’s why Bob personally argued this case in front of the Washington State Supreme Court. He won a unanimous victory. And the U.S. Supreme Court allowed his unanimous victory to stand, ensuring equality for LGBTQ+ Washingtonians, and sending a message around the country. This landmark victory makes it absolutely clear that everyone, regardless of whom they love, must be treated equally.
Since achieving marriage equality in 2012, Equal Rights Washington has been proud to continue work on critical issues for LGBTQ+ Washingtonians.
I am proud to say that Bob Ferguson has been a tireless advocate alongside us.
This was not the first time Bob has been at the forefront of the fight for fairness and civil rights — and it certainly won’t be the last.
As Washingtonians, we are lucky to have a courageous Attorney General like Bob, whose tireless pursuit of justice has improved the lives of so many in our state. Will you join me and show your support for Bob by helping him reach his $10,000 July fundraising goal?
