Dear Friend,

In Yemen, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and many of the other places where Mercy
Corps works, hunger is soaring. Currently, over 34 million people are
experiencing acute levels of hunger, and that number is expected to
increase this year.

Mercy Corps team members around the world are working to address the root
causes of hunger, and as our Senior Vice President of Programs, I am
continuously inspired by their determination, intelligence, and heart. I’m
also inspired by supporters
like you, who help fuel our work.

We’ve set a goal to raise $60,000 and we have just two days left to meet
this goal. Now is an especially good time to give, because a group of
generous donors has contributed to our Matching Gift Challenge Fund to

[ Lami ]Lami in Nigeria
The ongoing conflict in northeast Nigeria has displaced people from their
land and caused food prices to soar. Thanks to resources and training from
Mercy Corps, Lami’s crops are growing better, and she’s saved money.

Hunger almost never has one cause, and it almost never has one solution.
Violent conflict, economic instability, inequality, the effects of climate
change, the global pandemic — all of these issues can converge into an
environment where hunger takes root. Mercy Corps works closely with
communities to identify these underlying causes of hunger, and then
develops a plan to address hunger at its source.

For example, in Yemen, ongoing violent conflict coupled with economic
collapse and the global pandemic has created one of the worst hunger
crises in the world. Millions of people have been forced to flee their
homes. Food prices are skyrocketing, while unemployment is also high. More
than 20 million Yemenis do not have enough to eat.

Since 2010, Mercy Corps has been providing urgent life-saving assistance
in Yemen while also working to address longer-term needs. Currently we are
providing food vouchers, which can be redeemed for a basket of essential
food items including wheat flour, canned beans, sugar, and vegetable oil.

These Mercy Corps community health volunteers walk from home to home in
the northern hills of Yemen, helping mothers access malnutrition
screenings and providing resources to keep families healthy.

While responding to immediate food needs, we’re also working on solutions
to one of the underlying causes of hunger in the region — economic
instability:

We’re helping people get urgently needed income by hiring them for
short-term projects like rehabilitating water systems.
 
We’re supporting local economies by training people with skills they can
use to find work.
 
We’re supporting small business owners with cash grants to help them
recover from conflict-related damage to their businesses and loss of
capital.

These are just a few examples of the impact Mercy Corps team members are
