Yahoo News (7/28/21) reports: "Roughly 20% of electric vehicle owners in California replaced their cars with gas ones, a study shows. The main reason drivers said they made the switch was the inconvenience of charging. The findings suggest new challenges facing the growth of the nascent electric vehicle market. In roughly three minutes, you can fill the gas tank of a Ford Mustang and have enough range to go about 300 miles with its V8 engine. But on a recent 200-mile trip from Boston to New York in the Mustang's electric Mach-E variant, Axios' Dan Primack said he felt "panic" as his battery level dipped below 23% while searching for a compatible charger to complete his trip. 'I was assured that this might be one of the country's easiest EV routes,' Primack wrote. 'Those assurances were misplaced.'"

A waste, maybe, but at least they weren't white supremacist air conditioners. 


The Hill (7/29/21) reports: "The Tokyo Olympics staff has been touting sustainability initiatives by resurrecting recycled smartphones as medals and using construction waste for the Olympic torch.  But plenty of waste remains: 13,000 brand new air conditioners may be headed for the trash once the games are over, Tokyo Shimbun reported (Japanese language). Because it is difficult to maintain their performance during storage, the equipment may instead head straight for disposal, the piece said. These findings surfaced after reports that 4,000 of the 10,000 meals prepared for staff and volunteers at the opening ceremony were thrown away. Both the International Olympic Committee and the Japanese Olympic Committee 'have spoken a lot about reducing emissions, but what about waste?' tweeted New York Times reporter Hiroko Tabuchi, citing the Tokyo Shimbun piece."

 Wall Street Journal (7/29/21) column: "To get money for these traditional public works, Senate Republicans had to sign up for an epic binge of green subsidies and more handouts for states and localities. Consider mass transit, which received $70 billion in pandemic relief. Only about $20 billion of that has been spent. Yet Congress now will dole out another $90 billion over five years. This is the 'largest Federal investment in public transit in history,' a White House fact sheet boasts. Taxpayers in Little Rock are again subsidizing New York City’s subway and its fat union contracts. The deal includes an additional $66 billion for rail, $30 billion of which is earmarked for Amtrak's northeast corridor—a subsidy for political commuters. Rail has long been an obsession of President Biden, though he’s lately become fixated with electric cars. He scored $7.5 billion for a “national network” of electric-vehicle charging stations. Even FDR didn’t get a New Deal program to build gas stations. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm is also a big winner. She’ll run a green venture capital fund rivaling Kleiner Perkins with tens of billions to throw around at carbon capture, hydrogen, electric flying taxis, buses and high-speed mass-transit hyperloop. She will also be in charge of creating a “smart” grid with no less than $73 billion for transmission lines and batteries to back up heavily subsidized wind and solar power."
