Addressing growing hostility through education

Why is Hostility Against America Growing Among Our Young People?

From last year's violence, tearing down of monuments, and the attack on the Capitol, to this year's worsening racial divisions, growing repudiation of America's core principles, and the push for critical race theory to frame history courses, our nation's civic values seem to have reached a serious inflection point.

We can look to many sources for promoting the disparagement of America's founding ideals, including the influence of social media and partisan news outlets.

But most importantly, the lack of civic knowledge among our young people—especially about the country's founding principles that protect freedom for every citizen—is a principle cause of this sad state of affairs.

Many secondary schools are being pressured to teach critical race theory in place of traditional civics. Colleges are cutting American history and civics classes from their course offerings. Existing courses that are meant to be focused on America's founding principles often demean those principles and instead focus on identity politics, socialism, or on the latest intellectual fads like critical race theory.

But complaining will not solve these issues. We must take action. As a part of our secondary-school efforts, we have started a statewide pilot project in Florida to provide training and content to social studies teachers across the entire state. This program is proving successful and we plan to expand it to other states.

We are also developing and strengthening our undergraduate education programs on college campuses. In addition to classroom teaching, JMC campus partner programs engage students in our nation's founding documents and ideas through lively speaker series, debates, reading groups, and activities—all without partisan bent or political motive.

These programs are important for furthering the study and teaching America's founding principles and history on college campuses and for ensuring it continues to grow long into the future.

At the Jack Miller Center, we truly believe that, "The battle for the soul of our nation will be won or lost in our classrooms." If we want to fight against the worsening divisions and hostility among our citizens, we must educate our young people in America's founding ideals, which keep our diverse population together as a nation.

With your support, we can educate more and more of our young people and continue our progress toward those ideals of freedom and equality for all. To donate, click here ([link removed]) .
