John,
Industrialized meat and dairy production are killing the planet, poisoning rural communities and hurting independent farmers. The Farm System Reform Act would end some of the worst practices and begin building a just food system for people and the planet.

Meat and dairy production in the United States is based on heavily subsidized factory farming — a leading contributor to climate change, pollution, pesticide use, biodiversity loss, wildlife killings and worker exploitation. This broken system is the result of the unequal power that multinational meat corporations wield over federal farm policy.
Meanwhile, the Department of Agriculture allows beef and pork products shipped to the United States and processed or repackaged here to be labeled a "product of U.S.A.," giving multinational meatpackers a pass, eroding fair competition, and preventing shoppers from supporting local rural communities.
The Farm System Reform Act will put a moratorium on new and expanding factory farms, strengthen the Packers & Stockyards Act to protect family farmers, and restore mandatory country-of-origin labeling requirements. By doing these things, Congress can start to create a level playing field for independent family farmers and transform a broken food system into one that's just and resilient.
