President Biden is right -- the right to vote is fundamental to our democracy. In the 2020 election, more people voted than ever before in American history -- and the GOP is trying to make sure that never happens again.

Republicans across the country are doing everything in their power to make it so hard to vote that some people may not vote at all , which we all know is the intention of the GOP. They’re changing laws to keep marginalized groups, young voters, and communities of color away from the voting booth -- all on the false claim that the 2020 election was stolen.

In the words of President Biden: “the Big Lie is just that … a big lie.” We can’t let them steamroll our democracy simply because they didn’t like the results of the last election. We have to fight back -- it’s time to get the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the For the People Act passed .

I’m grateful that President Biden highlighted the urgency of this moment and the need to act now to protect the right to vote.

In Congress, I’ve led the fight to defend and strengthen voting rights by leading the charge on the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, which will modernize and restore the protections of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 after the Supreme Court’s disastrous decisions in Shelby County and most recently, Brnovich .
