A representative government is one that puts people first―not the greed and influence of Wall Street and corporate America.
This spring, the U.S. House passed HR1―the For the People Act―a once-in-a-generation democracy reform package to clean up our political system, expand and protect voting rights, get Big Money out of politics, and more. It even requires all future major party nominees for president and vice president to release their tax returns
But, as this bill languishes in the Senate, held up by Mitch McConnell’s filibuster, states across the country, driven by Donald Trump’s “Big Lie,” continue to pass anti-democracy laws that make it harder for people to vote.
It’s up to us to create a democracy that values the voices of all Americans. Sign now to tell President Biden to fight to pass the For the People Act―including appealing to senators, calling for an end to the filibuster, and ramping up the use of his bully pulpit.
This year alone, 18 states have enacted 30 restrictive voting laws, including four states that President Biden carried last November: Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and New Hampshire.[1]
This year we can use budget reconciliation―a special process to get around the filibuster’s requirement to get 60 votes to get something done in the U.S. Senate―to pass President Biden’s $3.5 trillion Build Back Better agenda to help working families, paid for by raising taxes on the rich and corporations. But that will not always be the case.
If we hope to create a fair tax system and economy that rewards work, not wealth; build millions of good-paying jobs while combating the climate crisis; invest in working families; protect our earned benefits; and create a democracy that is responsive to the American people, not wealthy donors and corporate interests; we need the Senate to pass the For the People Act!
Sign the petition to President Biden to use the full power of his office to address the voting rights crisis―including demanding the U.S. Senate end the filibuster and pass the For the People Act.
Only when we have a representative government will we be able to pass laws that reflect the needs of the American people.
