John,
Change happens in many ways. To address the most pernicious problems, we often need multiple strategies at once.
That’s what we have done in the fight against abusive policing.
Next month marks the 8 year anniversary of the ruling in Floyd v. The City of New York -- one of the groundbreaking civil rights cases that ruled the NYPD’s abuse of stop-and-frisk unconstitutional. A few months later, our multi-year campaign succeeded in overcoming Mayor Bloomberg’s veto to pass legislation that Jumaane Williams and I co-sponsored that outlawed racial profiling and other forms of discriminatory policing.
In the ongoing work to end police violence, we know we need not just litigation or legislation, but also organizing and building political power. That’s why it is so critical to have elected officials who work in partnership with grassroots movements for change -- using multiple strategies at once. Will you support my ongoing work to show up in the fight to end discriminatory policing, in partnership with grassroots movements? [link removed]
Today I joined Communities United for Police Reform for a rally to announce a new legal step in the fight to fully end abusive policing.
The Floyd ruling and our work together on the 2013 Community Safety Act helped end widespread, unconstitutional stops -- which at the time were so prevalent that the NYPD was stopping more young Black men annually than there were young Black men living in the city. We won because we worked together, community members, elected officials, and civil rights groups with a multi-pronged inside/outside strategy.
That’s the kind of elected leader I strive to be: someone who works in partnership with directly impacted New Yorkers and advocacy organizations to address injustices and transform our shared city.
Please, if you’re able, help me continue to do this work by supporting our campaign with a contribution today.
