Vision Resources Help Nurses Educate Families On Eye Health |
August is Children's Eye Health and Safety Month. With COVID-19 forcing many students into virtual learning, more students may be experiencing eye strain. We don’t blink as often while using computers and other digital devices, leaving eyes dry and irritated. NASN has resources on vision and eye health to help school nurses standardize approaches to vision health, facilitate follow-up eye care for students who do not pass vision screening, provide family/caregiver friendly educational information, and consult with leading pediatric eye care providers to promote best practices. |

Children’s Book Teaches About Community Immunity |
|
As we approach National Immunization Awareness Month and back-to-school time, there is a resource to help children learn about community immunity: "Mobi vs. The Shield: Community Immunity Saves the Day." Mobi, a pesky measles virus, has the goal of infecting everyone in Townsville. However, a superhero vaccine named Victor quickly throws a wrench in Mobi's plans. Together they explore several different situations about community immunity. Leslie Harrington (who does Goofus & Gallant for Highlights Magazine) beautifully illustrated the book.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that schools should practice “universal indoor masking for all teachers, staff, students, and visitors to K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status.” |

The CDC Foundation has released a series of reports to identify COVID-19 prevention measures being implemented across the country to inform guidance and help school and health leaders:
- Make actionable, informed, data-driven decisions to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus in K-12 settings.
- Identify policies, practices, and interventions to support the implementation of mitigation strategies.
- Build awareness around successes and challenges related to COVID-19 in K-12 settings.

NEW Free NASN Resource – A Model for School Nurse-Led Case Management |
|
At its core, school nurse-led case management (SNLCM) involves the highest form of application of the nursing process. While the focus is on students with chronic health conditions, SNLCM can also be applied to various social, mental, and acute health concerns of individual students or the student population as a whole.
This manual describes SNLCM and its benefits for students. It is intended to guide school nurses and school nurse leaders who plan to implement SNLCM, to outline the key components of SNLCM, and to provide program implementation and evaluation strategies and tools.

On August 10, 2021, the National Academy of Medicine’s Future of Nursing program will host two Twitter chats to engage with health care professionals and other relevant collaborators to hear perspectives on actionizing the recommendations from the Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity report in key areas, such as reducing practice barriers for nurses, advocating for nurses' well-being, diversifying the nursing workforce, and more.
