Statement from MassGOP Chairman Jim Lyons 21 years later, Beacon Hill Dems continue to defy the will of the voters July 29, 2021 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Evan Lips, communications director 617-523-5005 ext. 245 WOBURN -- In 2000, Massachusetts voters overwhelmingly approved a ballot initiative proposal to guarantee a 5 percent charitable tax deduction on state income tax returns. For more than two decades, Democrats on Beacon Hill have refused to honor the will of the voters. On Wednesday, House Democrats voted to do it once again, with the Senate expected to do the same today. Massachusetts Republican Party Chairman Jim Lyons issued the following statement in response: "There are few things that Massachusetts Democrats love more than spending other people's money and flouting the will of the taxpaying voter. Their actions not only hurt Massachusetts taxpayers, but also the local charities that stood over the years to receive their donations. More than two decades ago, voters approved charitable tax deductions, but the Democrats will use any maneuver they can to nullify the outcome of that vote. "The Democrats' stubborn 21-year refusal to recognize and accept the results of an election is a stain on the commonwealth."
