John -- Trump and Stephen Miller left our asylum system in shambles and left tens of thousands of children and families stranded on our doorstep.
The Biden administration promised to reverse these policies and create a humane immigration system. But earlier this week, they did the exact opposite by announcing an “improved” process of rapid deportations known as ‘expedited removal’ for families arriving at the border.
Expedited removal may sound efficient, but the reality is that it allows border patrol agents to keep families from having a fair shot in court. It’s essentially a loophole that allows agents to send families fleeing for their lives back into danger without giving them a fair chance to even see a judge.
I will not mince words here -- This is preposterous. This is not who we are as a country, and fast tracking deportations is simply unacceptable.
Many of these families facing expedited removals have waited for years in unthinkable conditions in camps at our southern border -- without access to proper food, shelter or medical treatment -- to use their universal right to seek asylum.
Expediting removals is a racist policy, disproportionately impacting Black and indigenous families who are seeking protection in the United States. The fact is this will result in children and families being sent back to the danger they were fleeing.
Our mission is to keep children and families together and to treat kids as they should be treated -- as kids.
We can and must do better. Now is the time to be bold, to reimagine an immigration system so children don’t have to question or fear for their safety. We must condemn the cruel policies of the past administration, not repeat them, and welcome families with dignity, compassion and respect.
Sincerely,
