** Cultural Survival Receives $900,000 Grant from MacArthur Foundation to Advance Racial and Ethnic Justice in an Equitable Recovery

On July 27, 2021, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation announced that it will be supporting Cultural Survival with a $900,000 grant to advance our work for a future that respects and honors Indigenous Peoples' inherent rights and dynamic cultures and to empower Indigenous Peoples to pursue their self-determination and sustain their lands, cultures, and ecosystems. ** Charges Brought Against Killers of Yaqui Water Defender Tomas Rojo Valencia
------------------------------------------------------------

On June 17, 2021, human remains were found in the Sonoran town of Vícam, within the municipio of Guaymas, Mexico. Following a series of DNA testing, the prosecutor’s crime laboratory released the information that these tests identified the remains as belonging to Tomás Rojo Valencia, the Yaqui spokesperson and water defender who had been reported as missing on May 27, 2021. ** Canada Takes Steps to Ending Violence Against Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People

Yanomami and Munduruku Peoples in the north of Brazil experienced a terrifying attack in May 2021. Men linked to mining activities and armed with firearms shot at Yanomami and Munduruku houses, set fire to their villages, and tried to expel Indigenous Peoples from their lands using homemade bombs. Daunnette Moniz-Reyome, a proud member of the UmoⁿhoⁿTribe in Nebraska, is turning 19 this year. She began modeling at age 13, appearing in multiple spreads and videos by Teen Vogue, which opened up the world of media attention to her. Despite her passion for the modeling and entertainment industries, Moniz-Reyome struggled to find Native American models to look up to. So, she decided to become that model for other Native American youth.

Yapti Tasba Bila Baikra of Bilwi, a network of community radio stations, primarily serves the Miskitu Indigenous population, however, some programs are aimed at the Mayagna, Ulwa, Tuahka Indigenous Peoples and the Afro-descendant population.
