As Norman Lear celebrated his 99th birthday this week, he reflected upon the America we live in today. When he co-founded People For the American Way alongside Barbara Jordan and other leaders 40 years ago, the threats our country faced were not so different from what we face now - particularly when it comes to voting rights.

“Frankly, I am baffled and disturbed that 21st century Americans must still struggle to protect their right to vote,” he writes in The Washington Post. “And it breaks my heart to see [our country] undermined by politicians more committed to their own power than the principles that should bind us together.”

“I came across Norman Lear’s book and will never forget how enamored I was with his writing and his story of founding PFAW. I thought, ‘This guy is saying what I’ve been dying to hear.’ And that’s what started it all.”

“I tell everyone I meet about People For the American Way because they are getting things done. When I decided it was not okay to be quiet or simply stand by, they gave me the information I needed to act.”

As the House Select Committee to investigate the January 6 insurrection gets to work this month, People For is continuing to advocate for real accountability for any lawmakers or government officials who enabled the brutal attack on our democracy.

Right Wing Watch released a new report, “The Cops Who Joined The Insurrection: Racism, Authoritarianism and Violence,” that examines the violent subculture that led to the insurrection, the participants, the planning and organizing before the events of that day, and the crimes of the active and retired law enforcement officers who took part in it. Make sure to read and share the report – it's important that everyone knows exactly what happened that day.

One year after the passing of Rep. John Lewis, who spent his life and career fighting for voting rights, we’re called upon to carry on Rep. Lewis’s legacy by fighting to pass federal legislation to protect those rights.

Faced with a recent raft of voter suppression legislation in the states threatening voting rights, this month People For redoubled our efforts to keep pressure on the Senate and the White House to pass the For the People Act – a significant portion of which Rep. Lewis authored. Our members participated in vigils across the country on the anniversary of Rep. Lewis's passing, joined volunteer actions, and called their senators to urge passage of the legislation. And in an op-ed, People For President Ben Jealous writes that this newest chapter in the voting rights struggle is only the latest in a series of attacks on voting. “When it comes to voting rights, you realize the past isn’t the past.”

Our current Supreme Court has been captured by the Far Right and corporate interests, and is dominated by Trump justices as a result of Mitch McConnell’s unethical actions to steal Supreme Court seats.

This month, People For President Ben Jealous presented testimony on the urgent reforms needed for the Supreme Court to prevent the complete politicization of the Court, which would rob Americans of their rights and undermine our democracy. Don’t miss this and our other work this month on defending our Supreme Court.

Even before her Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, it was clear that Second Circuit nominee Myrna Pérez is well qualified for the federal bench. Pérez has devoted her career to public service, and she’s an expert on issues that would be key to her judgeship.

Yet, several committee Republicans gave her a hostile reception from the outset and their questioning suggested they were just looking for an excuse to oppose her. And that’s why we’re making Her Fight Our Fight.
