John,SEEC members of Congress make a difference every day in combating the climate crisis and protecting our environment.

Case in point: Congressman Steve Cohen, who represents Tennessee’s 9th District, successfully working alongside community activists to cancel the controversial Byhalia Connection Pipeline.

In February, Rep. Cohen wrote to President Biden, urging him to direct the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to rescind its permit to Valero Energy and All Plains American to build a connection pipeline in Memphis.

The proposed Byhalia Connection Pipeline would have cut through historic predominantly Black neighborhoods and crossed over the Memphis Sand Aquifer. If approved, the pipeline could have irreparably contaminated Memphis’ source of drinking water.

In his letter to President Biden, Rep. Cohen highlighted the adverse environmental and economic impact on the Black communities through which it would pass.

Additionally, he quoted a land agent for the pipeline company who said the company chose to site the pipeline in southwest Memphis because it was “the least point of resistance.”

This month, the pipeline backers caved and canceled the project, citing lower U.S. oil production due to the COVID-19 production.

The reality is that the pressure applied by SEEC Member of Congress Rep. Steve Cohen and community advocates made a difference.
