friend, The new school year is quickly approaching, and the Koch network continues to do everything it can to influence and capture public education for their benefit. Our friends at the Center for Media and Democracy just published an article detailing how the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is inspiring lawmakers to file anti-Critical Race Theory bills. After attending an ALEC workshop “Against Critical Theory’s Onslaught,” several ALEC lawmakers introduced or supported bills banning the teaching of Critical Race Theory (CRT). We’re not surprised. Our latest report, “Koch Funded Moral Panic: Ultra Right Think Tanks and Critical Race Theory,” analyzes published materials from Koch network think tanks and reveals that the anti-Critical Race Theory movement is a product of a coordinated dark money campaign. We reveal that state politicians were almost entirely silent on the topic until Koch-funded entities started pushing the issue earlier this year. Now, more than 25 states have introduced legislation or taken other actions that restrict teaching CRT or limit how teachers can discuss racism and sexism. As we’ve seen in the past, ALEC inspired model legislation is a key component of these agendas. With school board elections on the horizon and curriculum at stake, we need to be louder than ever before so folks understand where this disinformation surrounding CRT is coming from. Please take a moment to read our report and share it with your community. Together we can turn this moment into a movement. Onwards, Jasmine Banks |
