Last time I wrote to you John, I shared some eye-opening information from a poll we commissioned about the work Democrats need to do to make inroads with rural voters.
Democrats not only need to do better outreach to rural voters. We have another problem on our hands: misinformation.
Our poll found that a whopping 37 percent of rural voters in battleground states believe Antifa was responsible for the attack on the nation’s Capitol. We know this isn’t true. The Capitol Police officers who testified yesterday before Congress know it isn’t true. But misinformation is being spread like wildfire on social media, and it’s getting rooted in rural communities across America.
In our poll we also found that rural Americans aren’t giving credit to Democrats for their accomplishments. Only 50 percent of rural voters know that President Biden was responsible for the $1,400 stimulus checks. 50 percent!
This is a huge problem, John. If we don’t take on the misinformation in rural communities, it’s going to be really tough to convince rural voters that Democrats have their backs. Even if it’s the Democrats who are bringing home the bacon in these communities.
The Democrats passed a strong Covid relief plan that included an expanded child tax credit that will help 90 percent of American families make ends meet. But will President Biden and Democrats get the credit on Main Street? It remains to be seen.
If we don’t go to rural America to get our message out about Democratic policies -- Trump and rightwing hacks will continue to spread misinformation online and control the conversation in rural America. Please chip in before our critical end-of-month fundraising deadline and help fuel our campaign to battle misinformation in rural communities.
It’s time to change the game on the ground. And that’s what we aim to do.
