Maggie Toulouse Oliver, NM Secretary of State

Jack,

On January 6, the U.S. Capitol was stormed by over 100 armed Trump loyalists. And yesterday, the House Select Committee tasked with investigating the violent attacks held their first hearing, as they begin to probe for answers on how this domestic terrorist attack was orchestrated and uncover the details of Donald Trump's involvement.

Because make no mistake: These violent rioters didn't act at random.

This was a deliberate insurrection, incited by Trump himself just moments before the attacks when he intentionally riled up a group of MAGA followers, spewing groundless claims of election fraud.

Trump's flagrant disregard for the will of the American people goes even further beyond his pride or ego. His baseless conspiracy theories continue to undermine our democracy and bring the integrity of our election system into question.

And the violent January 6 riots were a frightening glimpse of just how dangerous Trump's Big Lie can be when misinformation runs rampant.

As Secretary of State of New Mexico, I'm proud that our state has been a proven leader in pro-democracy practices. I remain committed to safeguarding our elections and ensuring that every New Mexican has equal access to the ballot box.

But since the start of Trump's Big Lie, voting rights have been under attack all across the country — and it's more urgent than ever that we restore faith in our democracy.
