Hi Friend,
Urgent needs never take a vacation, not even in summer, but neither does our compassionate network of supporters and responders. Here are some examples of how VOA is helping families in summer, through life-changing work that you help make possible:
WHEN WEATHER BECOMES DEADLY Extreme heat and soaring temperatures turn deadly when you don't have a home or a safe place to stay. VOA centers across the country are providing homeless people with safe shelter and meals. Our Homeless Outreach teams go out to people in need and provide essentials on the spot—like in Salt Lake City, UT (below) where we hand out food bags and water to stave off heat exhaustion and provide comfort.
SCHOOLS ARE CLOSED BUT KIDS STILL NEED TO EAT While schools are closed for summer, kids who depend on reduced or free meals often go without food. Our feeding and support programs, made possible by donor support like yours, are addressing this need, filling bellies and enriching childrens' lives with healthy meals.
THE CHANCE TO BE A KID When families struggle, many times it's hardest on the child. VOA summer programs are custom-made to care for and empower kids like those facing obstacles at home. Camp POSTCARD is a long-running tradition across many of our sister affiliates, like VOA Northern New England in Maine (below) where kids of all ages are served up good ol' outdoor recreation and exploration, with healthy activities and education.
When our VOA teams respond to urgent needs in the community, we say, "Whatever it takes!" This is our pledge that we'll be there with support and resources, as long as it takes to get someone back on their feet. We remain ever thankful that YOU are with us in changing lives this summer and every season!
Wishing you a happy rest of your summer!
Gratefully, Stephanie Paauwe, Vice President Volunteers of America
P.S. Kids and families beat the odds every day with VOA and you on their side. For many others struggling and needing help, consider donating to VOA. $12.50 can provide 3 filling meals for a hungry child. By making it monthly, you can help feed a family today and year round.
