I’m sure you saw the video: Last week, a white City Councilman in Alabama (a Groundwork Partner State) used a horrific racial slur against a Black, female colleague during a public meeting. The backlash was fierce and the story quickly made national news. Here at GWP, we immediately picked up the phone to ask our friends and partners on the ground what they needed in the moment. The answer was clear: Help us hold this man accountable.
So first, we amplified the voices of the local organizers and organizations leading response efforts on the ground – groups like the NAACP, Black Lives Matter Birmingham & Black Voters Matter.
Then, we talked with the Alabama NAACP about how we could engage all of you in the fight; folks who may not live in Alabama but who stand strongly in solidarity against this inexcusable racism and hate. The NAACP shared with us their grassroots-driven petition to expel the councilman. Will you sign on here?
There is no place for these disgusting slurs in our political discourse, or anywhere, ever. Take less than a minute right now to help the Alabama NAACP and their organizing partners on the ground show Councilman Tommy Bryant – and any public official who traffics in racism and white supremacy – that there are consequences for that behavior.
Sign the petition here!
Thank you for taking action today! We will be sure to keep you updated on other rapid response organizing opportunities happening in our Groundwork Partner States in the months ahead.
