On behalf of myself and the Board of LDAD, thank you for your participation in our effort as lawyers to defend American democracy and the rule of law against what has been and, in our opinion, continues to be a systematic assault on the core institutions, norms, and values of our now fragile American democracy.
In addition to thanking you, though, I am writing today to ask for your help. Many of us believed that the 2020 election and the corporate, civic, and political response to the attempted insurrection at the Capitol building signaled a national, bipartisan/non-partisan renewal of support for and faith in the core principles of our constitutional democracy. Unfortunately, the events of the past several months make clear that our hopes and beliefs were far too optimistic.
As a result, given our core mission and priorities, we have decided we must expand our efforts. To do so, we intend to invest in additional staff capacity, thereby enhancing the time and talent contributed by our volunteer members and leaders.
To make that expansion effectively, we must retain an Executive Director and proceed to implement administrative and mission-driven priorities to provide greater short and long term sustainability and strength. Doing so requires additional funds to enable LDAD to continue speaking, acting, and educating effectively as a vehicle for a non-partisan defense of our democracy and the rule of law, and to hold our profession and our political leaders accountable for upholding their oaths and their responsibilities to our Constitution. We believe these are vital common causes and common grounds, independent of partisanship and designed to ensure the center holds and our precious democracy can rebound from the unrelenting attacks over the past years.
We hope that you will join us in this effort and make a contribution in whatever amount you can afford to support us as we move forward.
