This is ridiculous, John:
On July 20, 2021, morning show broadcasts dedicated almost as much time to Jeff Bezos' space visit as they dedicated to the climate crisis during the entire year of 2020.1
Communities around the world are on fire, flooding, suffering through extreme heat waves, and being hit by hurricanes, but somehow that's not as newsworthy as a billionaire going to space?
I don't know what world the mainstream media is living in, but it's as clear as day, John: we can't wait for them to catch up with reality. We need to tell our own stories.
The relative silence from mainstream media about the climate crisis is, quite frankly, appalling. Not only are they ignoring the ongoing experiences of millions of people around the world; they shape a false narrative about the state of the crisis.
According to mainstream media, the climate crisis is just the occasional heat wave, no biggie, and something that won't really be a problem in our lifetime.
John, your support has already helped us achieve so much: together, we have built a global, multi-racial, and multi-generational climate movement that is constantly growing in power and size. We've taken to the streets to protest climate inaction, we've made sure climate is a topic in presidential debates and pressured members of Congress to support bold climate legislation. It's thanks to you, and this movement you're part of, that we're seeing courts issue orders forcing Big Oil to reduce emissions and international agencies calling for an end to new fossil fuel projects.
But the lack of news coverage about the climate crisis is making it clear that we still have a lot of work to do to combat the media's false narrative of "Everything is fine! Here, check out this billionaire in a shiny spaceship."
We can't let corporate media shape public discourse to ignore reality any longer. We need to do everything in our power to make sure the true stories of the climate crisis are told so often, and so loudly, that they are the only stories that remain:
Will you make a $3.50 contribution now to support our work?
Here's what 350.org is doing to shape a climate narrative that is based on reality:
But we can't do it without you.
Chip in today. Let's work together to make it impossible for the media, corporations, and politicians to continue to ignore the fact that we're living through an emergency.
Because this world belongs to us, not Jeff Bezos.
Onwards,
- Team 350
