Yesterday was the first hearing of the January 6 Select Committee in the House of Representatives. Four police officers who defended the U.S. Capitol during the violent insurrection shared their testimony with the committee, and it was harrowing.

The officers described the horrific events they experienced that day as they defended members of Congress, their staff, and the Capitol itself from a violent attack inspired and incited by the then-President of The United States. Officers were verbally harassed — including Black officers who were repeatedly called the n-word — injured, and even killed.

You would think that every member of Congress whose lives they saved would be grateful for their sacrifice in the line of duty and committed to getting to the truth.

You would be wrong.

Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy is working to obstruct our investigation. Some of his members, including Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Matt Gaetz, and Paul Gosar, even staged an outrageous press conference during the committee’s proceedings to distract attention from the officers’ testimony.

These are not people who are fit to lead the United States House of Representatives ever again.

I will keep working to get to the truth and stop truth-denying, Trump-aligned Republicans like Kevin McCarthy from ever holding the Speaker’s gavel, but I need your help.
