** Hecho a Mano. Episode 4: Roberto Mejía and Patricia García
------------------------------------------------------------
The fourth episode of our Hecho a Mano (Handmade) ([link removed]) podcast spotlights Roberto Mejía and Patricia García who reflect on their journeys as artists, mastering popotillo design, and building their business, Yolopopotli. They live in Los Reyes LaPaz, Mexico, and represent their Nahuatl culture with their art. To describe popotillo art as “painting with straw” does not fully capture the beauty of their work, rather, it’s helpful to picture Patricia with her bundles of vibrant colors, pitched forward over the jewelry box, cross or frame she’s working on, using one hand to pin a piece of straw in place, and the other to bend the straw, lining it up perfectly alongside the previous straw to build whichever dreamscape she’s envisioning. The work is meticulous, and performed at a wide range of scales, from entire landscapes woven into an image no bigger than a thumb, to grander, framed pieces to hang on your wall.
A good portion of this very special recording is actually of Roberto interviewing his wife, Patricia, and we appreciate the intimate look at the home life they share. Today, there are few popotillo artists. Roberto and Patricia have been crafting this artisanal tradition for three generations within their family and they work together as a team in continuing the art. Join us by listening to this beautiful interview ([link removed]) and hear them reflect on their own experiences, visions, and inspirations in seeing the world through popotillo.
The podcast Hecho a Mano ([link removed]) is an offering from our Bazaar Program to highlight artists sharing wisdom from their Indigenous traditions. The Bazaar Program is a key component of Cultural Survival’s Indigenous rights model, not only supporting creativity as a way of life and communing with the natural world, or for cultural continuity, but also because selling art and crafts is the second-highest source of income generation for Indigenous communities which supports the economic sovereignty and self-determination of Indigenous Peoples.
***Note: We have decided to postpone all in-person Bazaars in 2021 since COVID-19 is still spiking in some areas of the world and travel restrictions into the U.S. continue to fluctuate.

** Hecho a Mano. Episodio 4: Roberto Mejía and Patricia García
------------------------------------------------------------
UU. Continúan fluctuando.
