Just this past Monday, Jamaal went on MSNBC to discuss the "soft bigotry of denial" in Congress — the implicit bias and racism that run through our policies and institutions.
He explained how when we fight to bring resources to underserved communities, establishment Democrats and Republicans respond by funneling more money into our carceral system. When we raise awareness about the state of our public schools, Republican lawmakers pass racialized laws to erase our country's history and criminalize our educators.
While we come together to call out for change, lawmakers continue to hold on to an outdated procedure like the filibuster to prevent progress.
This is the current status quo. Our policies, procedures, and budgets directly reflect our values, John. And we know that people everywhere, not just in NY-16, are ready for bold, progressive change.
