Hi Prospect readers,

Covering the Biden administration has been vexing. In some departments, his administration has been better than I expected. In others, I have been underwhelmed.

For instance, while Attorney General Merrick Garland enjoys #resistance liberal hero status for his thwarted Supreme Court bid, his appointment to head up the Department of Justice is not so heroic.

In this piece, which was produced in partnership with The Intercept, I dug into the powerful roles Garland has been farming out to the favored lawyers of Big Tech; it was actually quoted on the Senate floor during the Judiciary Committee hearing for Vanita Gupta, who was recently confirmed as associate attorney general.

In my mind, this is quintessential Prospect reporting, the type of deep investigation that mainstream news won’t touch. We have to be willing to criticize the Biden administration where others might pull their punches.

This is what I think you, our readers, come to us for: An informed, unique, and progressive vantage on this watershed moment in Democratic power and American politics.

We depend upon your support to tell stories that matter and that keep Washington on its toes, with a tenacious focus on Ideas, Politics, and Power.
