Dear Friend,
Since announcing my candidacy to serve as Colorado’s Attorney General, I have remained focused on how we can address the opioid crisis, which has devastated so many lives, families, and communities. We have lost too many family members and neighbors; we need to do better in addressing this epidemic. That means providing more treatment and recovery services, and moving away from putting those struggling with addiction in jail because we lack sufficient treatment options. Last week, we took a major step in this direction.
Our team has led on lawsuits and investigations against a number of irresponsible corporate actors who hurt Coloradans by wrongfully encouraging the use of opioids, which in turn derailed and ended lives. Those actors are now being held accountable and forced to pay funds for drug treatment, recovery, and education/prevention efforts. Just last week, I announced that Johnson & Johnson and the three major pharmaceutical distributors will pay over $300 million to fund drug treatment, recovery, and education/prevention efforts here in Colorado. Including the funds we have obtained from prior settlements (with McKinsey & Company, the Sackler family, and Purdue Pharma), we are now looking at almost $400 million for Colorado to address the opioid epidemic in our state. Here’s the Denver Post article ([link removed]) on this most recent action.
The money these actors will pay, and the commitment to disclosing critical documents that detail how this crisis came about, cannot begin to address the wrongs we have endured over the 25 years. But these actions will help Colorado transform our approach to opioid use disorder. After all, in the last year, we witnessed more overdose deaths than ever before. Over the years ahead, we need to be motivated by the lives that were lost and work to save lives. I, and my team, will remain laser-focused on this critical goal.
Thanks for your support in helping me serve and do this important work.
Phil
