Dear John,

UNITE HERE Local 7 members at the Sheraton Columbia are fighting to be recalled to work following pandemic-related layoffs, and they need our support.

At the beginning of the pandemic, the hotel closed, and over 80 workers were informed that management planned to renovate the hotel while it was closed. These workers asked Aimbridge Hospitality, which manages the hotel, to extend recall rights, ensuring that workers could return to their jobs when the hotel reopened. Unlike other hotels represented by UNITE HERE Local 7, Aimbridge refused to extend recall rights, and immediately cut off workers' health and life insurance policies.

The property is now set to reopen in August as The Merriweather Lakehouse Hotel. Aimbridge and hotel owner, Costello Construction, have told workers they must reapply for their jobs with no guarantee that they will be rehired.

Union and community members are organizing to demand that employees be recalled to their jobs. In addition to signing a letter of support, supporters are invited to a demonstration and press event next week outside of the hotel in Columbia. Event details are listed below.
