Not only does ending cash transactions threaten the jobs of thousands of dedicated MTA employees, it also gatekeeps access to public transportation.

Dear friend --

Last month, the MTA announced that they do not plan to resume cash transactions at subway booths. Let me be clear: This is the wrong decision.

Not only does ending cash transactions threaten the jobs of thousands of dedicated MTA employees, it also gatekeeps access to public transportation. One out of every nine New Yorkers does not have either a checking or savings account -- and unbanked New Yorkers have been hit especially hard by this pandemic. We must recognize this reality and respond accordingly.

This choice -- which disproportionately harms working and undocumented communities -- does the opposite. Rather than facilitating an equitable recovery, the MTA is making it harder for those who need it most to access public transportation.

Without the heightened risk of Covid transmission, there is no reason that access to transportation should depend on banking status. By continuing to accept cash transactions, the MTA can protect thousands of jobs and ensure that undocumented and working New Yorkers can use public transportation.
