First, well over 100 Republicans voted against certifying Joe Biden’s democratically won Electoral College votes.
Then, after Donald Trump’s Big Lie about the election spurred a violent attack on our nation’s Capitol, all but a handful of Republicans voted against forming a bipartisan, 9/11-style commission to investigate the Jan. 6 insurrection.
A congressional investigation into the Jan. 6 attack is finally beginning – but if the Republican leadership had had its way, there would be no investigation at all.
With their words, their votes, and their actions, Republicans in Congress have proven themselves committed not to truth, democracy, or the Constitution, but to Donald Trump – a twice-impeached, historically corrupt former president.
Fortunately, Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats overrode Kevin McCarthy and GOP objections. And despite McCarthy’s attempts to stack the deck with obstructionists like Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan – who can claim credit for personally motivating and emboldening those same insurrectionists – House leadership has moved forward with establishing a select committee that will investigate the Capitol attack with seriousness and care for uncovering the facts and the truth.
But Republicans and the right–wing media are attacking Speaker Pelosi in an attempt to undermine the legitimacy of this investigation. That’s why I’m counting on you to stand with Democrats today and speak out clearly for truth, accountability, and justice.
We cannot allow Republican extremism to hold truth and accountability hostage.
