CHIP IN TO HOLD POLICE UNIONS ACCOUNTABLE
John,
Police Unions endanger the well-being of Black people and communities.
Just days after the brutal murder of George Floyd, then-Minneapolis police union president, Bob Kroll, said Derek Chauvin and the other three officers were “fired without due process” despite a clear video of Floyd’s public execution.1 Shameless and despicable, yes, but par the course for police unions throughout the country.
Think about how many times a police department has outright lied about an officer murdering a Black person only for their account to be debunked by video. Or the times there wasn’t video and police got away with murder.
One reason why police departments feel emboldened to lie about their racist, and deadly behavior is because they know their unions will protect them. Police unions have vast protections, well beyond those of any other labor union.
John, for decades, Black communities throughout the country have been targeted by police departments and the police unions that provide cover for officers no matter what, no matter how egregious their behavior. Color Of Change has been taking on these unions for years.2
And we won’t stop fighting police union disinformation and ruthless tactics, but we need help from supporters like you to win. John, can we count on you to power this fight?
John, here’s how police unions help cops get away with murder:
1. Police unions push for legislation at the state and federal level that shields their members' corrupt, violent, and deadly behavior.
2. They then roll out endless disinformation and "copaganda" to defend and the protect the most violent cops like Derek Chauvin and block all accountability and reform by buying off politicians.
Make no mistake, John: Right now, police unions are the biggest obstacles to healthy and safe communities, with true police accountability.
Even recently, the Seattle Police Union tried to prevent a simple investigation of Seattle cops who participated in the January 6 insurrection that tried to overthrow the United States government.3 All of this is a pattern of behavior.
As The Atlantic’s Adam Serwer put it: “This is not a system ruined by a few bad apples. This is a system that creates and protects bad apples by design.”4 Police unions are the heart and soul of a system that is rotten to its core.
John, make a donation to Color Of Change to power our fight to dismantle a racist policing system. City by city, state by state, we are putting in work to chip away at the influence of police unions. We WILL show their toxicity.
CHIP IN TO HELP FIGHT BACK AGAINST POLICE UNION PROPAGANDA
This won’t be an easy fight, John. But with your help, we’ll continue to work tirelessly to expose police unions’ dangerous behavior and damaging and deadly actions against Black people. Your generosity fuels our efforts.
Thank you for standing with us.
