The successes we’ve had cleaning up the power sector give us inspiration and hope that we can make a measurable difference in a short time. In 2020, the U.S. electrical sector burned less than half as much coal as in 2008 and got nearly twice as much of its energy from renewable sources. Along the way, total carbon emissions from electricity consumption fell by 40%!

Sadly, the transportation sector produced almost exactly as much carbon pollution in 2019 as in 2008. (Although emissions dipped by about 15% in 2020, this was largely a result of people driving less during the pandemic.)

But we have the power to change that. Consumer support for zero-emissions vehicles (ZEVs) is higher than ever, and major automakers have committed to electrifying their vehicle fleets.

Other countries have already stepped up with stronger vehicle standards. EDF activists are calling on President Biden to meet this moment by establishing strong standards here in the U.S. to eliminate auto pollution by 2035, and ensure that over half of new vehicles sold by 2030 will be zero-emitting.
