For more than 20 years, I’ve been proud to serve on the board of People For the American Way with my friend, mentor, and our founder, Norman Lear.
Norman’s a true American legend who, aside from his monumental accomplishments as an entertainment and cultural icon, continues to be one of our country’s greatest champions for democracy and American values.
Today, Norman begins his 100th year of life!
So in celebration of Norman’s immense contributions to American progress and in the spirit of his irrepressible activism, I ask that you join me in recommitting to our deep support of the mission of People For the American Way.
To honor Norman on his birthday, all donations through July 31 will be 3X-MATCHED!
This year marks 40 years since Norman joined with other iconic leaders such as the late Congresswoman Barbara Jordan to found an organization dedicated to defending democracy and the fundamental rights and dignity of all people; an organization committed to stopping the hate and bigotry being fomented by the Far Right.
As you well know, with the recent rise of far-right extremism and authoritarianism, People For’s mission is now more important than ever.
And, right now, while People For is leading in the fight to save our democracy and reject far-right extremism, we need you standing shoulder to shoulder with us more than ever.
That’s because the right to vote is under attack more aggressively than at any time since Jim Crow. And once again, it’s Black voters in particular who are being targeted.
It’s because the Far Right is now positioning itself as a movement at war with democracy itself, eager to throw out our entire constitutional order built on free and fair elections. No longer convinced they can win elections by winning over the will of the People, they want to cement their grip on power with gerrymandering and voter suppression … by sowing distrust in elections with conspiracy theories … even by passing laws that give far-right lawmakers the ability to override election results they don’t like.
They try to hide the truth by obstructing investigations into the January 6 U.S. Capitol insurrection and pushing dangerous revisionist history in our classrooms, all while encouraging violent extremists with a nod and a wink.
The list goes on, but you can see how important it is that, in this pivotal moment for our country, American values and American democracy have staunch defenders like People For the American Way.
So with gratitude to Norman for founding People For and for all he has done to move us closer to a country and a society in which “We the People” truly means ALL the People, I ask that you dig deep and give – or give again – to support our shared mission to stop hate and defend democracy.
