Dear John, COVID-19 is not only claiming lives – the pandemic is robbing children around the world of the education they deserve. 90% of the global student population has lost critical learning time due to school closures. In many countries, girls shoulder the burden of this loss much more than boys. Girls who aren’t in school face increased threats of exploitation, adolescent pregnancy and early and forced marriages. If you act now, John, you can keep girls' learning – and their childhoods – alive. This week, U.S. government officials are meeting with other world leaders, and the future of education is on the agenda. Ask President Biden to invest in the futures of girls around the world by supporting the Global Partnership for Education, a major effort to help get children back in the classroom. Funding the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) will change the lives of girls like Farhiya*, age 16, who dreams of being a doctor when she grows up. When the pandemic struck Somalia, Farhiya’s school was shut down. After suffering a 5-month learning gap, the government launched a GPE-funded online education program that allowed her to continue her studies from home. Today, Farhiya’s dreams are still in sight, but they are in danger. Some of her classmates were forced to marry during the school closures. Without programs like the Global Partnership for Education, childhood can slip away from girls like Farhiya at any moment. With access to quality education, girls are better protected from the dangers of the present and better prepared for the possibilities of the future. We must ensure that world governments commit to robust funding to empower this next generation of leaders. Send a message to President Biden urging him to educate girls around the world. Thank you for being a voice for kids, |
