Child Defender,
Working with the CDF Freedom Schools® program is a dream come true. Growing up in Chicago, many of my friends had the opportunity to attend CDF Freedom Schools sites in middle and high school, and they always shared what an amazing time they had and all that they learned and experienced. I never had the opportunity to participate as a scholar, but I am honored to now serve as a CDF Freedom Schools Site Coordinator in my community.
I love the CDF Freedom Schools program because of the impact that it has on the children we serve and on the staff who make the program possible. The children, we call them "scholars," gain academic skills and boost their self-esteem and belief in their ability to elicit change. The college-aged Servant Leader Interns (SLIs) who serve as the instructors also have the chance to grow as they engage with a strong network of educational leaders all across the country.

Knowing that the excitement and purpose my friends felt all those summers ago is still being felt and experienced by CDF Freedom Schools scholars today--and knowing that their experience is being shaped by my role as a Site Coordinator--is such a rewarding feeling.
This work of fostering literacy skills, empowering scholars, equipping families with resources for their continued success, and creating intergenerational leadership is so important. I hope you'll take a moment to learn more about what your support makes possible.
