Hi there Democracy Advocates!

We have some breaking news that we want to share with you.

On the heels of our IRS whistleblower complaint against the business lobbying group the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), The Center for Media and Democracy (CMD) has begun filing campaign finance complaints in 15 states against ALEC and its legislative leaders for illegally giving and receiving sophisticated voter management campaign software linked to the Republican National Committee to help their campaigns.

By making the partisan voter management and campaign software available to its 2,000-plus members across the country, ALEC illegally provided in-kind campaign contributions worth more than $6 million in the 2020 election cycle, in violation of its 501(c)(3) charitable tax-status

Along with Common Cause and Alliance for a Better Utah, we are filing campaign finance complaints challenging the legality of ALEC’s voter software scheme in Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Wisconsin.

National Media Covers CMD Complaints

The Associated Press reported on our IRS whistleblower complaint. Read the story.

“What the complaints show is that ALEC is a partisan organization at heart, dedicated to promoting Republican policies and supporting elected officials who will implement those policies,” said Arn Pearson, the center’s executive director.

Numerous outlets, including ABC News and The Washington Post, ran the AP story.

Other prominent news organizations covered our complaints and letters regarding ALEC:

  • Newsweek: Group Accused of Infringing Nonpartisan Status By Giving Voter Info to RNC
  • The Daily Poster: Whistleblower Says Conservative Nonprofit Engaged In Illegal Politicking
  • The Nation: Naming and Shaming the Organizations, Corporations, and Billionaires Behind Voter Suppression
