This Friday (July 30) marks 56 years to the day that Medicare was signed into law. 

For 56 years, this program has protected the health and well-being of millions of families. Now we have a chance to substantially improve and expand it. 

This year’s anniversary is particularly important because we’re closer than we’ve ever been to expanding Medicare eligibility and coverage in the budget reconciliation package – but it’s not a done-deal.

To celebrate this anniversary and call on Congress to pass Medicare expansion and improvements, we’re collecting stories about how these measures would impact you or your family. Will you share yours?

We’re looking for stories from not only those who would be personally impacted by Medicare expansion and improvements, but also from caregivers and those who know someone who would benefit.

Here are the three key proposals we’re calling for:

• Allow Medicare to negotiate the price of prescription drugs, thereby lowering drug costs and saving money for seniors who can’t afford prescriptions. 
• Strengthen Medicare to include dental, hearing, and vision coverage as well as establishing an out-of-pocket cap.
• Expand Medicare by lowering the eligibility age from 65 down to 60 – expanding the program to cover up to 20 million more people.

These policies aren’t a replacement for Medicare for All, but they would be the most significant expansion of the program since its inception. We must take this opportunity to immediately improve the lives of millions of people and reduce the power of the corporate health care industry.
