Dear John,
It was so great to meet you recently. I am passionate about increasing economic opportunity for every community ensuring a high quality of life for every Houstonian, and protecting every neighborhood from our next flood. I invite you to visit our website to learn more about my positions on these critical issues.
Beyond the issues, I am running for Houston City Council At-Large 1 because of my family and my students. My family came here from India; my dad came here for graduate school, and my mom came here when she was 12. This city and the country more broadly helped my family achieve their American Dream--my dad started an engineering business, my mom became a college professor, and I attended Rice University and then Harvard Law School.
However, for many children in Houston, this is not the reality. As a teacher at an underserved high school, my students had the same aspirations as I did and their parents worked just as hard, yet they were trapped in poverty. Whether it was homelessness, flooding three times in three years, or lack of public transit, my students faced structural inequities.
I am running for Houston City Council to Build One Houston where everyone, regardless of background, has the chance to reach their dreams.
But, I can’t do this alone, and we’ve begun to build a movement. That requires your help whether by contributing to our campaign or volunteering to join our team. Whatever support you can provide, whether it’s knocking a few doors, calling some Houstonians, or donating a couple of dollars, everything helps.
Thank you, and let’s build this movement together,
Raj
