Dear John:

As we wrap up the month of July, we're still #PFLAGProud and connecting, all year long. Here are some opportunities to continue your connection with PFLAG and the causes that are important to all of us.

Support

Celebrating and Supporting LGBTQ+ People With Disabilities

Today we celebrate the 31st anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which made it illegal to discriminate against a person because of their disability.

As we close out Disability Pride Month, we want to recognize and honor the estimated three-to-five million LGBTQ+ people in the U.S. who also have a disability (according to this helpful 2019 report from the Movement Advancement Project).

Here are some great resources, videos, essays, and interviews to check out:

Education

Three Steps to Being a Better Advocate for Inclusive Sex Ed

Just because you’re staying in doesn’t mean your learning should slow down! So, stay safe and take these steps to engage:

  1. Learn: Check out pflag.org/policystatements which includes details about our board-approved policy statements on inclusive sexuality education, HIV and STD prevention, and safe and welcoming schools.
  2. Watch: Presented by PFLAG National Board Member Antón Castellanos Usigli, watch LGBTQ Sex Ed: Health, Rights, and Pleasure which focuses on the “triangle approach” to sex education that was formulated by the Global Advisory Board for Sexual Health and Wellbeing.
  3. Share: Use social media to share LGBTQ+ inclusive sex-ed resources and curriculum from organizations like More Than Sex Ed, Advocates for Youth, and Planned Parenthood

Your reminder: Call your Senators about the Equality Act

Anti-equality voters are still outpacing our phone calls regarding the Equality Act - so no time like the present to pick up the phone and dial for equality.

Visit pflag.org/equalityact, every day, and reach out to your two Senators and tell them why you support the Equality Act; you can do this using our helpful scripting on the website. If your Senators already support the Equality Act? Call anyway! Thanking them and letting them know that they have YOUR support is a critical action to take.

Visit pflag.org/equalityact to get started!
