Indivisibles,
The Senate is up against a major deadline this coming week for the For the
People Act (S. 1): The Senate needs to pass the bill before they go on
recess, or there won’t be sufficient time to put its provisions into
effect before the 2022 elections.
That’s why voting rights activists, including Indivisibles across the
country, aren’t letting up for a single moment. Last week, Leah wrote a
message explaining why she [ [link removed] ]was arrested taking part in a civil
disobedience action last week:
I didn't take this action lightly. But I felt called to do it. On Saturday
night, Ezra and I attended a vigil for John Lewis. We listened to Rep.
Sherman, a member of the Texas Democratic House of Representatives. Rep.
Sherman, along with his fellow representatives, have fled the state to
deny Republicans the quorum they need to pass vicious voter suppression
legislation. They've come to Washington because they need every one of us
to fight just as hard for the For the People Act as they're fighting for
Texas.
And we heard the words of John Lewis himself, in his final essay:
Though I may not be here with you, I urge you to answer the highest
calling of your heart and stand up for what you truly believe. In my life
I have done all I can to demonstrate that the way of peace, the way of
love and nonviolence is the more excellent way. Now it is your turn to let
freedom ring.
When historians pick up their pens to write the story of the 21st century,
let them say that it was your generation who laid down the heavy burdens
of hate at last and that peace finally triumphed over violence,
aggression, and war.
After the vigil, we went home and I thought about what I'd tell my
9-month-old son about this moment when Republican attacks on the freedom
to vote threatened everything we hold dear. And I knew I needed to act. So
Monday morning, on the anniversary of the 1848 Seneca Falls Women’s
Convention, I joined the Moral Monday march.
You can take part in more Moral Monday events like Leah (more info on that
below), or take other actions like calling your senators or making a video
for your friends asking them to call theirs. No matter what you do, it’s
crucially important that you do something this week to fight for S. 1. The
fate of our democracy literally depends on this work.
With that, here are your weekly to-dos:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your Weekly To-Dos
1. [ [link removed] ]Keep calling your senators and demand they pass S. 1 without delay
-- and get a free sticker! We need to keep the calls coming in every
single day this week to get the For The People Act over the finish
line. We're also giving out "No Filibuster" stickers to everyone who
makes a call this week! [ [link removed] ]Use our form to automatically be connected
to your senator, and then fill it out again to reach your other
senator’s office to make sure they know that we need to get S. 1 done,
no excuses.
2. [ [link removed] ]Make a call about the Recovery package. The Senate released their
draft budget resolution last week, and we’re glad it includes many of
our top priorities. But the $3.5 trillion offered by the Senate is the
floor, not the ceiling, and House Democrats must use the power of
their majority to augment this proposal to truly meet the scale of the
current crises. Read the resource about the recovery package, then
pick your top issue and make a call.
3. Medicare’s 56th birthday is July 30th. Indivisible, along with a group
of our closest partners, is organizing a day of action later this week
-- keep an eye out on our social media for more details as they come
together.
4. Take a moment to look below at the local and national events near you,
and sign up for one! We have a lot going on, from introductory
trainings to direct actions, and you won’t want to miss it.
P.S. It may not seem like much, but a lot of time and resources go into
building call scripts, organizing events, and developing informational
messages like this one -- not to mention funding ads, billboards, and
more. As a grassroots organization we depend on funding from folks like
you to make it all possible -- [ [link removed] ]if you’re able, click here to donate to
help fund our work.

National Events
[ [link removed] ]Register for our Redistricting Hearing Training on Wednesday, July 28
at 3 PM ET/12 PM PT. As states prepare to redraw voting maps, how much do
you really know about that process and the gerrymandering that often goes
along with it? [ [link removed] ]Take our 10-question Redistricting Quiz and see where
your knowledge lands. Then, register for Indivisible Civics’ nonpartisan
Redistricting Hearing Training so that you can be informed about what
resources are at your disposal on how redistricting works state by state.
We'll cover the most effective ways to participate in the redistricting
process, including best practices for attending public hearings,
participating in official online comment periods, and developing a
community of interest.
[ [link removed] ]Join a Moral Monday civil disobedience event in your state today, or
in DC next week. We’re supporting the Poor People’s Campaign in hosting
events nationwide today to take action for voting rights and democracy
reform. Please note that these events will include nonviolent civil
disobedience, and that means there is a chance that those who participate
will be arrested. You should make an intentional decision on whether or
not you, or anyone attending these events, would want to participate in a
civil disobedience action. The Poor People’s Campaign event organizers
will provide guidance and training prior to the events.
[ [link removed] ]Join TONIGHT’s climate working group at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT! The climate
working group scored a major win this week by keeping the pressure up on
progressive voting bloc members, who officially voted to include the
American Renewable Energy Standard in their recovery package demands. Join
the climate working group on Monday to celebrate this WIN, learn where
Biden is stalling on climate, and how Appalachia is organizing for just
climate transition. [ [link removed] ]Click here to register.
[ [link removed] ]RSVP for our next monthly National Activist Call on Thursday, August
5. The National Activist Call is a space held on the first Thursday of
every month for activists, group leaders, and new members alike. Join
Indivisibles across the country as we celebrate successes, discuss our
national strategy, and take time to create connections while building
community with each other.

Indivisible in California, working to oust House Minority Leader McCarthy,
and the New Rural Project in North Carolina led by Cynthia Wallace,

IndivisiWin of the Week
[ [link removed] ]A tweet from Indivisible GA Coalition that reads
"Indivisibles across Georgia support the Field Hearing
on Protecting the Freedom to Vote happening today. See
our statewide letter for details of why we believe the
Senate must pass the #ForThePeopleAct NOW. @ossoff ,
@SenatorWarnock , @SenateDems @SenateRules #gapol #S1"
Georgia Indivisibles created a statewide sign-on letter
ahead of the Senate Rules Field Hearing on Protecting
the Freedom to Vote today, outlining their priorities
in the bill, and Sen. Klobuchar read it into the
official Senate record! This is a great illustration of
the power of Indivisibles when we work together.
That’s it for this week, folks! Be sure to follow us on [ [link removed] ]Facebook,
[ [link removed] ]Twitter, and [ [link removed] ]Instagram for breaking news, and text INDIVISIBLE to
97779 to join our mobile rapid response team.
In solidarity,
Indivisible Team
