Azacualpa Environmental Committee responds to questions from Rights Action
What is the name of your encampment?
We Defend Our Rights.

On what date was it set up? And where?
The encampment was set up on July 27 in a mining area 60 meters south of the community of Azacualpa.

How many people are in your camp?
Approximately 100 to 150 people. Most are from the community of Azacualpa.

What do you demand?
We demand a stop to the terrible dynamite explosions that cause physical and psychological damage, especially to children and elderly people. And we no longer want exploitative work near the community and the cemetery which is already half destroyed.

How does your camp operate? 24 hours a day? Do you take shifts?
Yes, 24 hours a day. There are day and night shifts - mostly women during the day and men at night.

We will be here, peacefully, defending our rights, our cemetery, our village of Azacualpa and what is left of the environment around here, as long as it is necessary, as long as the police or military do not interfere on behalf of Aura Minerals/MINOSA.

Is the mine fully operating, partially operating, or is it completely shut down?
The mine is completely shut down.

Where do the people stay at night? Is there a kitchen to feed the workers?
The truth is that we only have a nylon hut - something super simple. There is no kitchen, no nothing. They only made that hut to protect themselves from the rains.
