Hey John,
Thirty-one years ago today, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) -- a landmark civil rights law prohibiting discrimination against people with disabilities in areas of public life and all places open to the general public -- was signed into law.
As the most comprehensive piece of disability rights legislation in American history, the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act was a monumental moment in the fight for the civil rights of all citizens.
But let’s be clear -- the ADA was not signed and enacted into law overnight .
We would not have the ADA in place without decades of activism from the disability rights movement.
For decades, thousands of Americans with disabilities, caretakers, and organizations who make up the disability rights movement challenged the unjust exclusion of people with disabilities from American society and led the fight for full civil rights for the disability community.
Thirty-one years after the passage of the ADA, members of the disability community are still combating ableism and fighting for full inclusion and accessibility -- including in our electoral systems.
As we reflect on the impact of the ADA, it is imperative for every single one of us to work to make the promises of the ADA a reality for every American living with a disability.
Thanks for being part of our team,
When We All Vote
