Dear John,

I wanted to send you a quick update! My colleagues and I have been in our nation's capitol these past two weeks, meeting with the Vice President, Senators, and members of Congress to defend the freedom to vote for every Texan.

We've held press conferences, a Voting Rights Conference, and a nationally-televised Town Hall on MSNBC to raise awareness of what's going on in Texas and across the country.

After an election that Greg Abbott’s appointed Secretary of State attested was a success, was smooth and secure, and had the highest turnout in my lifetime, Republicans responded this legislative session in Texas by filing over 65 anti-voter bills--more than Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, and Arizona combined.

Then when the anti-voter omnibus bills failed, Greg Abbott called us back for a special session. Instead of focusing on fixing the electric grid and helping communities recover from COVID-19, the items made eligible for consideration were full of hyper-partisan priorities, including undermining the most sacred right to vote.

The question to me is: what is the problem we are trying solve? And I have yet to get a good answer.

In response to attempting to rig the system and stack the deck against Texas voters, my colleagues and I chose the option of last resort and once again broke quorum. This is not something we did lightly. But we are prepared to continue to fight these shameful bills with every tool and tactic available to us.

Just like politicians shouldn't be able to use partisan mapmaking to pick and choose the voters of their districts, they must not be allowed to pick and choose who is able to vote for or against them by putting up barriers to participation.

And the truth is, public servants who are focused on doing what's right by the people of Texas should have nothing to fear from free and fair elections and public accountability.

At the Capitol there are many things we work hard to find consensus and compromise on, the freedom to vote cannot be one of them. Instead of pandering to Trump's Big Lie and myths of voter fraud, we must continue to modernize our elections and make it easier for every Texan to cast their ballot freely, safely, and equally.

I am committed to this fight, no matter the consequences. We will not go backwards!

All the best,
